Pretty Famous in Marfa

Recognize this skull? Maybe it reminds you of the Eagles' album covers? You'd be right because it's the same artist. Valentine native Boyd Elder paints these skulls and you can see them right now at the Wrong Store in Marfa.

Rocking Out in GMNP

Great blog post by the American Geophysical Union of their hike in Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

"While in West Texas over spring break, the “Border to Beltway” students took a hike up McKittrick Canyon, in Guadalupe Mountains National Park.We were hiking in the forereef deposits of the Bell Canyon Formation.

Reefs are geologic structures built by living organisms, so you won’t be shocked to learn that there were plenty of fossils to be seen, though mostly as a hash of bits and pieces, occasionally as whole body fossils."

Dog Day Afternoon

Anthony Whitt wrote about his hike in Guadalupe Mountains National Park's Dog Canyon "in the remote northern corner" of the park. "This is a secluded region perfect for birding, hiking, horseback riding and good old solitude," he wrote.

Marfa Treasure Hunt

Glasstire's Christina Rees took this photo of the Marfa Book Co., a real treasure in the little town. Sadly, it's now closed. The building where it was housed is being turned into a four-story boutique hotel. The new location of the Book Co. has yet to be announced, but we're sure it will still be a gem wherever it lands.

P.S. Rumor is it'll go back into the building currently being renovated.

Hot Dogs in El Paso

Traditional jerseys for the El Paso Chihuahuas are red, white, and black but for the team's 2nd annual Bark at the Park, where fans can bring their leashed dogs to the game, the team wore these hilarious jerseys.

After the game, the jerseys were auctioned off to benefit the El Paso Humane Society. We hope they'll break them out again!

The Secret of Hudspeth County

"The Hill is like a chapel filled with inexplicable alters belonging to some unknown religion."

Shhh! Don't tell anyone we told you, but there's a secret in Hudspeth County. El Paso Artist James Magee has created a masterpiece amid a stark landscape.

You can visit The Hill by private appointments. Public openings to the site are pretty rare but do happen. Watch The Hill's site for information.

Blue Skies

Mimms Ranch in Marfa is part of the Dixon Water Foundation, researching sustainable ranch management and water conservation across Texas. On Mimms there is a trail that is accessible to the public for walking and jogging. While they don't advertise this, you can ask around next time you're in Marfa and a local can tell you how find it. Expect spectacular vista views and precious solitude. Just what the doctor ordered! Photos by Mia Warren.

Fuzzy Flowers

You know what's great on a Sunday morning? Brunch with a mimosa. You know what's great any day of the week? Velvet Pod Mimosas, like these seen at CDRI.

Here's more on the pink plant: Velvet pod mimosa is abundant and common in the Chisos and Davis Mountains of the Trans-Pecos on brushy hillsides from 2500 to 6500 feet, and occurs north into New Mexico and Arizona and south to Mexico.
