One of the best rides in the state is the 74 mile Scenic Loop...the starting point is Fort Davis in Jeff Davis County.
The ride goes by McDonald Observatory, the trailhead for the Madera Canyon trail, Prude Ranch, Davis Mountains State Park, and Fort Davis National Historic Site.

I have thought about riding in this area but have not made it yet. How many riders were there? Is the terrain hilly?
ReplyDeleteRick, this is a great area to bike. Portions of the 74 mile Scenic Loop are rolling and easy, but most of it is challenging...the route takes riders right by McDonald Observatory! It is regularly rated the "Best Ride in Texas," and earns it in beauty and the challenge it affords. I would definitely recommend it (or at least portions of it if you're not in great shape) to anyone wanting to give it a try. There are other great rides in the region, too. Another favorite of mine is riding from Fort Davis down to Balmorhea State Park for a dip in their nature spring-fed pool! ReplyDeleteA non-profit organization in Fort Davis, the Davis Mountains Education Center, is now offering cycling support for groups...check it out at www.dmectexas.org and click on the bicycling link.
