Bunk at Fort Davis National Historic Site
One of our favorite parts of the tour of Fort Davis National Historic Site is seeing the bunks used by the soldiers. Here's a shot of one of them, courtesy of Randy Mallory and the Texas Historical Commission. The Fort's website says,"Fort Davis is one of the best surviving examples of an Indian Wars' frontier military post in the Southwest. From 1854 to 1891, Fort Davis was strategically located to protect emigrants, mail coaches, and freight wagons on the Trans-Pecos portion of the San Antonio-El Paso Road and on the Chihuahua Trail." The Fort is one of our favorite places in the region, because it takes very little imagination to FEEL you're back in the 1800s with the Buffalo Soldiers.
