Davis Mountains State Park

The shelter is atop a hiking trail in Davis Mountains State Park, the trail that connects to Fort Davis National Historic Site.  The trail on the National Fort side--the Hospital Canyon Trail--is shown in this flickr slideshow. The trail has incredible vistas of the historic fort and the community of Fort Davis below the mountain.

Madera Canyon Trail

North of Fort Davis on the Scenic Loop, there's a wonderful trail with 24 hour public access, the Madera Canyon Trail.  The land is on the Nature Conservancy's Davis Mountains Preserve, which is limited to public access except for "Open Days and Open Weekends."   Check our events calendar for those dates!

Lost Mine Trail in Big Bend

Possibly the quintessential hike in Big Bend National Park, the Lost Mine Trail offers hikers magnificent views and access to the variety in geological formation, plants and animals of the Chisos. It is a moderately difficult hike of 4.8 miles roundtrip, in close proximity to the Basin.  The trail starts at an elevation of 5,600' and steadily climbs to the top of a 6,850' promontory overlooking Pine and Juniper Canyons.
