Hummingbird Happiness at CDRI

Master Naturalist Jack Dunaway in Waxahachie snapped this pic of hummingbirds at CDRI and had this to say:

"Let me tell you what a great time I had visiting CDRI last week. I had not been to the Davis Mountains for over 40 years, but will not let that happen again! I did not remember how intriguing the Trans Pecos is. I will be back to explore some more."

So glad you feel this way, Jack! Great pics!

Hummingbird banding at Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center

From our friends at Fort Davis' Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center:

"These little girls were very interested in a hummingbird banding being conducted by our local expert bander, Kelly Bryan.  The banding at CDRI was a part of last weekend’s Annual Hummingbird Festival held in Fort Davis (Hummingbird Capital of Texas).   During the banding, Kelly mentioned that a hummingbird he banded here in West Texas was recorded at a banding station just south of Anchorage, Alaska in July of ’13 and then again (at the same location in Alaska) in June of ’14.  That’s a long way for such a little bird to fly..."

Do you have birding photos of Guadalupe Mountains National Park?

Our friends at Guadalupe Mountains National Park contacted us this week for help from our photographer friends!

"Guadalupe Mountains National Park is nearing completion of a new bird checklist.  This new checklist will be very attractive, and will feature full color photos.

We are seeking high resolution (300 dpi minimum) "action" photos of people birding, painting or drawing, or photographing birds in Guadalupe Mountains National Park.  However, we do not currently have any photos in our collection which meet our needs.  We are primarily interested in photos of groups with diverse audiences, if possible.  A bonus if it includes a National Park Ranger wearing a "flat top" hat.

If you have, or know of such photos, we would be grateful if you would allow us to use them.  We will gladly give the photographer(s) a credit line in the bird checklist.

Please contact me if you have any questions, or have any photos we can use.
Thank you, in advance, for your assistance!

Meet Tux, Gentleman Cat of Historic Hotel Limpia

Tux takes a break from his vigorous and exhaustive
duties on the Hotel Limpia porch
There's a quiet gentleman overseeing the staff, greeting visitors, and generally making sure everyone has a terrific stay at the historic Hotel Limpia in Fort Davis.

Meet Tux, a big boy black-and-white "tuxedo" cat whose duties also include supervising cushion softness, and sunlight maintenance on porch furniture.  He does a great job, too, as the property maintains a gracious hospitality for visitors to the Davis Mountains.

While the Hotel Limpia has its roots in the early days of Fort Davis, now Fort Davis National Historic Site, the current hotel main building dates back to 1912.  Read about the hotel's history here.

Many hands (and paws, as it turns out) contribute to a hotel's hospitality.  Tux is one of those unsung heroes of the Davis Mountains.

When you're planning a trip to McDonald Observatory, Fort Davis National Historic Site, Davis Mountains State Park, or Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center....or the upcoming Fort Davis Hummingbird Festival (which is hosted by the Hotel Limpia!) consider the Hotel Limpia for your next stay!

Hummingbird Season!

Hummingbird on an agave!
A couple of years ago, we had the chance to watch a hummingbird banding session at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center near Fort Davis.  Even the casual visitor to the Center this time of year is treated to a wonderful hummingbird viewing opportunity.  There are many feeders hanging around the visitor center, and you're welcome to sit awhile and enjoy watching these beautiful creatures.

Since the hummingbirds are back, we thought we'd share some of those banding session photos with you!
The hummingbird are captured in cages and temporarily put in mesh bags while they await inspection and tagging
Birds are handled carefully during very step of examination
Measuring each bird, before applying the band
Blowing air through a straw to move the birds feathers aside.  Is this female hummingbird carrying eggs?  Their skin is so transluscent, you can see eggs!
Lovely!
After handling, they remain still, then flip over and fly off!
Our region has been hard hit the past couple of years with drought--and last year, wildfire--and that's been tough on habitat and food sources for birds.  One of the keys for hummingbird survival is the sugar water bird lovers put out at hummingbird feeders.

Would you like to feed hummingbirds and help with their survival?  There's a complete guide written by a resident of our region, Carolyn Ohl, available here.  Our region is also lucky to have Kelly B. Bryan, a hummingbird expert...the same gentleman who conducted the banding session at Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center.  He has a great website, www.westtexashummingbirds.com and he's also provided a great guide to the birds of our Far West Texas Chihuahuan Desert from Texas Parks and Wildlife here

The Nature Center is one of many sites on the Far West Texas Wildlife Trail, a project of our own Texas Mountain Trail, our neighboring Texas Pecos Trail and Texas Parks and Wildlife!
